Akg solid tube mic - hmmm... i have a c4000b, wich is i guess the same, but without a tube??? dont like it on vocals at all!! on instruments its fine...

I think you should maybe look into getting a good tube mic to go with your solid state pre and compressor. might be what yer looking for....
