You could try daisy-chaining multiple firewire devices.
the m-audio range may suit your needs and a few select models are now supported by a specialist version of pro-tools.

Simple solution:
-get at bare minimum 512 ram
-tascam fw1884 $1300 (control surface/mic pres/etc)
-digital performer $329
when you have extra cash:
-a second hard drive dedicated only to audio
-uad-1 project pak

Most important thing for the sound would have to be the preamps. What are you using as far as pre's go?
those are really gonna make the biggest difference for heavy metal drums.

The 4 channel sytek is around 800 and that can have two sets of different preamps. 1 really clean set and the burr brown option with a little color. I own one. And use it regularly.

i have an focusrite 8 channel octopre (pre-amp). I plug several drum mics into it 2 of which are condensers which require phantom power.

focusrite isa 428 (although you'd have to add 4 more pre's to get
